Confident Buxton IV are too good for Belper

Buxton IVs beat an experienced Belper side 2-0 in torrential rain that made playing conditions difficult.

Buxton made good use of the pace that their junior players bring to put pressure onto the opposition throughout.

After an even opening, Buxton began to get on top.

An elusive run through the inside left channel by Ben Cusco led to early cross by winger Jack Bentley that Richard Jelbert put away with a close range finish to take a deserved lead.

After half-time the atrocious conditions got worse with water not draining from the pitch in many places, but Buxton kept their heads up and were not put off by some physical challenges.

Man-of-the-match Jack Edwards thumped the ball home to double the lead after Ben Cusco’s initial shot by was saved by the Belper keeper’s legs.

Buxton’s full backs Wayne Pearson and Andy Shaw had fine games showing calm decision making and solid tackling.

Despite some spells of pressure, Belper’s only real chances came from penalty corners and one of these was put away after Buxton’s keeper Dave Balderstone saved a powerful hit from edge of the ‘D’ only for the ball to rebound fortuitously back to same player.

Buxton finished the game the stronger side to complete a narrow hard fought victory.
