Buxton veterans take the plaudits in cross country league

Buxton Athletics Club’s veteran section took centre stage at this year’s North Staffordshire Cross Country League.

The club’s vet 55 runners secured three podium finishes in the overall league.

For the women, Kate Ledin and Sheila Bradley dominated, with gold and silver medals respectively.

For the men, Paul Light also took silver prize.

Meanwhile, two of Buxton’s long distance specialists took on the ultra running Tour de Helvellyn event.

The gruelling event clocks several thousand feet of ascent and descent in its 38-mile course.

Lucy Stephenson finished in 133rd place, in a time of 12 hours and three minutes, while Aleks Kashefi came home in 136th place, thanks to a time of 12 hours and ten minutes.

Two recent seasonal events in the fell running calendar saw solid performances from Buxton runners.

In the Christmas Cracker Race (out of Tittesworth), Nick Jones finished in 33rd place out of over 240 runners.

Peter Bailey (49th) and Kevin Mottram (98th) completed the team.

At the Litton Christmas Cracker Fell Race, Richard Bouglas finished in 36th place out of over 200 runners.

He was joined by Martin George (41st), Peter Bailey (55th) and Bill Alsop (181st).

In Parkrun action, Rick Aldred (8th) and Richard Goff (16th) both set new personal bests on the tough Lyme Park course, while the Bailey duo of Alfie and Peter came home in 13th and 14th places at Marple.

Shannon May Booth also ran strongly at Marple, finishing in 43rd place out of over 140 runners.

• The club’s monthly run, the Pavilion Gardens 5K, is on Saturday, January 9 with a 9am start.
