Buxton teenager Abbie Wood took sixth place in her first ever Commonwealth Games swimming final on Thursday.

The 19-year-old was competing for England in the gruelling women's 400m Individual Medley, a race won by compatriot Aimee Willmott who just edged out double Commonwealth champion Hannah Miley of Scotland.

Wood had qualified eighth fastest for the final, meaning she had lane eight itself for what proved an exciting race as she finished in a time of 4.40.45, just under six seconds behind Willmott.

Wood, who competed for Great Britain at the World Championships in Budapest last year, will be back in action on Sunday as she competes in heat one of the women's 200m Individual Medley, in which she will once again be up against Willmott.
