Buxton runners compete in testing conditions

Buxton AC members took on the British Fell Relays in extreme weather conditions in Llanberis, Wales, last weekend.

Buxton fielded two teams, a men’s open and an over-50s mixed team.

From a total of 93 teams, the men’s open team, consisting of Rob White, Mark Cudahy, Tim Aldridge, Jason Bennett, Mark Pursell and Darran Hawkins came away with a pleasing 39th position.

The veterans, consisting of Simon Harden, Pete Bailey, Ros Barratt, Simon Moorhouse, Bill Alsop and Sheila Bradley finished 15th in their respective category.

Several juniors took part in the English Schools Fell Championships recently at Kendal, and in the Year 7 category Lucas Parker was second, with Will Tighe seventh.

In the combined Years 8 & 9, Elliot Meylan finished 17th.

Also on the fells, the final event in the Goyt Valley Series, the Windgather race, was held from Burbage Institute last weekend.

The Windgather is an unrelenting, tough 13-mile route around the hills of the local Goyt Valley, with 2.5K feet of ascent.

The club was well represented with 16 members taking place.

First home was Darran Hawkins in 30th place, followed by Mark Cudahy (50th), Richard Bouglas (92nd), Jason Tatton (94th) and Pete Bailey (100th) who just sneaked in to the top 100 finishers.

Other finishers were: Rob Wallis (112), Martin Thomson (118), Ian Francis (122), Frank Golden (134), Sheila Bradley (141), Aleks Kashefi (150), Annemarie Claye (151), Sarah Guise (157), Helen Brunt (164), Mark Babington (167), Bev Golden (168) and Wendy Bainbridge (179).

On the roads, Rachel Chatwin had a fine run to finish as the second fastest female at the Werrington 10K, while Alfie Bailey took part in the Marple 5K Parkrun, bringing his time nicely down to 24.34.

At the latest Pavilion Gardens 5K, there was a thrilling duel between the club’s Steve Watson and Rob White with the latter securing victory with a time of 17mins, 15secs.
