No sooner had they tasted victory in their first competitive league hockey match for 15 years than Buxton Ladies were at it again!
Seven days after their historic 1-0 victory over Uttoxeter, Buxton hammered Ashbourne 3rd 4-0 in Division Two of the Derbyshire Women’s League.
And there was no doubt about the star of the show -- Nicole Roe, who plundered a hat-trick and set up the other goal to land the player-of-the-match award.
Buxton also marked their first home game of the season by christening their new kit, which has been sponsored by Steve’s Tyres, of Dale Road in the town.
They were soon off to a convincing start, never giving Ashbourne a chance to get going, and they took the lead in the 20th minute when a strike by Roe took a deflection off a defender’s stick to wrongfoot the goalkeeper.
With Naomi Sessions and Lesley Montgomery-White linking well on the right wing and Sarah Bentley and Annie Baldwin doing likewise on the left flank, Buxton kept up the pressure. The second goal came when Roe broke from midfield and charged into the D to set up Kirsty Dewberry for a brilliantly executed shot.
Entering the second half, the home side refused to let the momentum drop, with Emily Bradbury, Karen Ainscow and Molly Shaw working hard to keep the defensive line tight.
An excellent move involving Sessions and Kirsten Moore teed up Roe’s second goal, which sneaked past the ‘keeper’s pads, courtesy of another deflection. And although Roe was substituted moments later, as Buxton made changes to keep the players fresh, she returned to the fray ten minutes from time when Sharon Sessions had to go off after a nasty tumble while battling for the ball. Roe duly completed her treble with a cracker of a shot that was lifted over the ‘keeper’s foot.
Of the few chances that Ashbourne created, goalie Helen Szostakowicz was more than equal to them.
