THE THIRD event in the Derbyshire Youth Sailing 2011 Peak Dinghy Spares Series took place on Saturday May 29, at Swarkestone Sailing Club near Derby.
In challenging breezy conditions, local experience paid off for Swarkestone SC member Callum Lambourn as he raced to a convincing victory.
Safety RIB driver Charli Hadden said: “The sailors coped brilliantly with the conditions. The wind was pretty strong out there and the gusts were above force five. Everyone worked really hard to race and when boats did capsize, the sailors were really quick to get their boats back up and sailing again.”
The first race saw Lambourn in his Laser 4.7 take his first race win of the day ahead of Ogston SC sailor Jessie Wellbourn-Hesp and Carsington SC sailor Alice Woodings in their Laser Radials.
Afterwards, he said: “These are my favourite conditions for sailing when there is plenty of breeze and it’s shifty too. I’m not saying it was easy, the gusts are pretty difficult to handle but everyone seems to be having fun too.”
Lambourn secured his second race win of the day after lunch, with Alice Woodings taking second and the Albacore of Ogston SC sailors Matthew and Emma Metcalfe-Smith in third after four laps of the course.
Worsening weather conditions brought a halt to race three, but upon its restart, after a course adjustment, Lambourn sailed to a strong race win again ahead of Alice Woodings, with another Ogston SC sailor, Adam Hart, taking third in his Laser Radial.
The next events in the series take place at Ogston Sailing Club on Saturday June 4, and at Carsington Sailing Club on Saturday June 11. Pre-register at www.dysailing.com.
