Boxing: Josh falls to narrow points reverse

Buxton ABC’s Josh Taylor went down to a narrow points loss in Birmingham last week as he began his second season with the club.

Taylor travelled to the Midlands for his latest junior contest against hometown opponent, Joe Burige.

Taylor has amassed a large amount of experience and this was his 15th bout since joining Buxton ABC. Against an equally-skilled opponent, Taylor worked hard at picking his shots carefully to avoid getting caught.

The youngster started the bout well, showing more patience and maturity rather than tearing in to get on top of his opponent.

In a bout that was close throughout, both boxers were operating with a high work-rate and good foot-work to compliment nice shot selections.

With little to choose between the two, the Buxton corner were hopeful they may have got an unexpected nod away from home, but Taylor narrowly lost out on the judges’ card.

A recent switch in amateur rules has resulted in the code closer resembling the professional ranks, with scoring altered to the familiar round system rather than points-per-shot.

There has also been the much-debated removal of the headguard for elite seniors.

l Buxton Boxing Club is open four nights a week and is open to those wishing to box or keep fit for £10 per month.
