THREE High Peak golfers put in strong performances to help the Derbyshire Ladies golf team take the runner-up spot in a regional competition.
They finished second behind Lincolnshire, the overall winners and last year’s national champions, after a week of competition in the Midlands North Region.
It was the best result Derbyshire has had for over 20 years.
High Peak has a particularly strong showing this year at county level as the Derbyshire chairman is Sheila Whitaker who plays at Buxton and High Peak, while Jane Byatte, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, is this year’s Derbyshire Ladies Golf Captain.
Jane paid tribute to the players who competed so well during the week: “The team spirit has been excellent and the result is a great achievement.”
Jane, who is not playing this year to concentrate on being ladies captain, was able to use her own experiences from playing county golf for over 25 years to help bring out the best in her players and get good results.
The successful team included Kim Bradbury and Megan Burgess who play at Cavendish, and Francesca Bougen who plays at Glossop.
During the week of competition, 36 holes were played each day, with Derbyshire competing against Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Nottinghamshire, who were also the hosts.
“I took a squad of nine with two reserves but they haven’t ended up playing,” explained Jane.
The team would like to thank their golf ball sponsors, Robert Byatte RJB Groundworks and Ian Barratt of Derbyshire Oatcakes for their support. Jane is organising a County Captain’s Am-Am to be held at Buxton and High Peak Golf Club on September 8.
l Anybody who would like to help sponsor the event is asked to contact Jane on 07917 177467. The money raised will be used to help fund squad training.
