Buxton’s Abbie Wood will compete at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Holland later this year, after being selected by Great Britain.

Her place on the team was confirmed this week following her strong performances at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Glasgow earlier this month.

Fast heat swims in her favoured events of 400m individual medley and 200m breaststroke ensured Abbie, aged 15, qualified for the Open Age group finals.

In the 400m IM final, Abbie lined up against world number one Aimee Wilmott and finished a respectable sixth as she posted a personal best time of four minutes, 48.76 seconds.

In the 200m breaststroke final Abbie lined up against British record holder Hannah Miley and world number four Sophie Taylor, and finished seventh after another personal best of two minutes, 30.67 seconds.

Abbie also competed in two junior finals, winning the 200m individual medley and finishing third in the 100m breaststroke.

The European Junior Swimming Championship, held in Dordrecht, Netherlands, run from July 9-13.
