HIGH Peak kickboxers enjoyed something of a gold rush after returning victorious from the WKC World Championships in Spain.

Top fighters from the Buxton NWCKB Kickboxing Club won the right to represent their country at the prestigious event in Kadiz last month following their success at the British Championships in Manchester earlier this year.

Instructor Rick Allsop, mother and daughter Sharon and Danielle Allsop, Kim Stafford, Sam Camp, Holly Rogers and Josh Downes were among 200 fighters on the England team.

Against world-class opponents, Rick, Sharon and Kim fought their way to gold medals to become WKC world champions. Danielle, Holly and Josh competed in a very strong junior division, with Danielle winning a silver medal, narrowly losing out on a split decision, while Holly and Josh returned with bronze medals. Sam just missed out on a medal, fighting in one of the strongest weight categories.

Rick said: “I would like to thank all my fighters and students for making this the best year ever for the Buxton club, and would also like to thank Chris Boughey for 20 years of hard work and friendship.

“The world championships have no funding and the fighters have to all pay for their flights, accommodation and fight suits for Canada 2012, which is why they strongly rely on the support of the local people and businesses.”

Any companies interested in sponsoring the world champions when they defend their titles, should contact Rick on 07880 990 229.

The club meets at the Church Hall, Bath Road, Buxton, every Thursday between 7.30pm and 9pm, and Sunday from 2.30pm to 4pm.
