The Chatsworth Estate provided a stunning backdrop for the third annual Peak District Triathlon, which combined running, swimming and cycling at sprint and standard distances.

High Peak Tri Club fielded ten athletes across both distance events, and all performed extremely well, especially as the course was both testing and hilly.

Despite wet suits, the swimmers found the River Derwent cool, but things soon warmed up for the circular bike-leg, which ascended to Beeley Moor before returning to Chatsworth, via Kesteledge, Walton, Holymooorside and Baslow. The stiff, uphill off-road run took athletes up to the Hunting Tower and beyond before a finishing shute that was lined with vociferous spectators at the end of a popular event that has really grown in stature since its inaugural year.

Competition in the sprint distance, which comprised a 750m swim, 20k bike-ride and 5k run, was particularly strong because it was designated as a qualifying race for the European Age-Group Championships to be held next year in Austria.

But High Peak’s Elizabeth Batt topped her age group in a time of one hour, 24.06 minutes, as did Pam Oliver in 1.40.28. David Fryer-Winder was eighth in his age category in 1.20.57, while Nicola Longden (1.35.17) was 17th and Kate Casey (1.51.50) 24th.

The club also crowned two age-group winners in the standard race, which comprised a 1000m swin, 40k bike-ride and 10k run. They were David Davidson, who clocked 2.56.38, and Jo Baker, who posted a time of 3.06.11.

Chris Groves was sixth in 2.40.53, Lucas Jones ninth in 2.40.54 and Peter Williams 20th in 3.06.30.
