Whaley Bridge see good work in first half go to waste

Cheshire League Division Two: Whaley Bridge 2, Sandbach United 3

A POOR second-half display saw Whaley Bridge let a two-goal lead slip on the way to a second league defeat of the season.

Whaley took the lead after 15 minutes when Sandbach failed to clear a Matt Brown corner and Charlie Watts fired a left-foot shot in off the post.

Sandbach were denied an equaliser when a fierce, long-range shot crashed off the bar and fell kindly for James Tattersall.

Whaley missed several good chances but went 2-0 up on 41 minutes when Matt Brown lobbed the ball towards the back post and Ray Dwolitka headed home.

Sandbach showed more purpose in the second half and pulled a goal back after 59 minutes. Disaster struck for Whaley when, on 67 minutes, Tattersall was caught out by a terrific lob from more than 30 yards.

On 75 minutes, Charlie Watts’ bullet header was denied by the Sandbach keeper. This proved to be a turning point as Sandbach took the lead from the resulting clearance.

After last week’s terrific display, this was a disappointment but Charlie Watts turned in a solid performance as Whaley’s man of the match.
