Whaley Bridge pay price for lacklustre start

A LACKLUSTRE first half cost Whaley Bridge in the quarter-finals of the JB Parker League Cup.

Whaley made a slow start and, after conceding a sloppy corner in the first five minutes, Cheadle centre-back Tom Rogers appeared at the back unmarked to head across the box for Vinnie Braine to score with a scuffed shot which Des Walker couldn’t clear.

Whaley allowed Cheadle far too much time to play and pick their passes. Cheadle’s Wes Wilkinson skimmed a shot wide of the far post after Whaley gifted a foul on the edge of the box, while their man of the match, goalkeeper James Tattersall, kept the visitors in the game as he twice saved when one-on-one with Vinnie Braine.

Whaley started the second half much better, but although the approach play was very good they still lacked the cutting edge.

With nothing to lose, Micky Ryan was pushed forward with 15 minutes to play as Whaley piled on the pressure, but some brave keeping from Tyler, backed up by centre-halves Tom Rogers and Bradshaw, denied the visitors.

Whaley created two very good opportunities late on only for a defender to block on the line and Morris to shoot wide of the target.

Whaley Bridge return to Cheshire League First Division action with a run of three important games, starting on Saturday when they welcome Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds to Horwich Park (kick-off 2pm).
