Buxton Football Club is this week mourning the passing of one of its unsung heroes, Stan Finney, who died on Monday, aged 70.
A regular supporter and Mega Bucks member of many years, Stan had provided long hours of service as one of the club’s team of pitch maintenance volunteers, had done other jobs at the ground as they arose, and for a time a decade ago had served as a director.
In addition, as chairman Tony Tomlinson explained, Stan had performed a further outstanding service for his club.
“When the club’s very existence was in doubt, in the late 1990s on account of its debt burden, Stan lent money to ensure its survival, without any guarantee of the sum being repaid, and I’m sure that our supporters will agree that Stan deserves a glowing tribute for the contribution that he made,” said Tomlinson.
“We will miss his jovial presence at the Silverlands and send our sincere condolences to his family.”
