The Millers repel Viking invasion

Evo-Stik League First Division South: New Mills 3, Goole 0

NEW MILLS repelled the invasion of The Vikings as three excellent second half goals saw them ultimately run out as comfortable victors against Goole at Church Lane on Saturday.

In the third minute, Jordan Edridge, playing in a more advanced role than usual, shot straight at Rob White when well positioned, and the youngster seemed to be revelling out on the right wing as he delivered some dangerous crosses which unfortunately his team-mates couldn’t quite convert.

As the first half progressed, the game turned into an attritional midfield battle with both sides struggling to create any significant goalscoring opportunities.

After the interval, New Mills started positively and again a low Edridge centre caused confusion in the visitors defence but the ball somehow managed to evade Ben Deegan at the back post.

Moments after the striker had a goal ruled out for offside, the deadlock was finally broken on the hour with the goal coming from an unlikely source. Deegan was fouled a couple of yards outside the penalty area and young full-back James Moss delightfully curled in the resulting free-kick to register his first goal for the club.

Three minutes later and The Millers had doubled their advantage. Leon Grandison appeared to be fouled while in full flow towards goal but with no decision made by the referee, Ben Deegan picked up the loose ball and delicately chipped Rob White.

The best was saved until last though as Deegan scored a wonderful second goal. Again the powerful striker picked up a loose ball but this time was around 35 yards from goal and after seeing White fractionally off his line, Deegan produced a pinpoint, measured strike to beat the stranded keeper who couldn’t scramble back quickly enough to prevent the ball from dipping under his crossbar.

New Mills: Coates, Bowler, Moss, Swirad, Chadwick, Innes, Pickering (Douglas-Pringle), Edridge (Field), Deegan (Needham), Grandison, Horrocks. Unused sub: Taylor.
