Team prove their worth

Vodkat Premier Division

Glossop NE 2, Winsford 1

Glossop proved their worth in the Vodkat Premier Division after beating third-placed Winsford at Surrey Street on Saturday.

It was a shaky start as keeper Jon McIlwaine was forced to make two impressive saves after powerful strikes from Liam Newman.

Winsford eventually beat McIlwaine five minutes before half time when a corner was headed at the Glossop keeper by Michael Brandon from short range. McIlwaine was unable to hold the ball and Brandon had an easy nod-in.

Glossop came out for the second half with a point to prove and when Niall Cannon replaced Sam Hind, the tempo of the game quickly changed.

Cannon was involved in the play immediately, getting on the end of a flick-on by Garry Kharas. Cannon then played in Tom Streets, but he blazed his shot over the bar.

The equaliser came when Dave Morris crossed the ball from the left, which was beautifully controlled on the chest by Kharas. The striker kept his cool to drill past Richard Mottram at his near post.

The game was heading for a draw but Broome had different ideas. A shot from Adam Oakes was blocked and the ball was looping out of play. Broome could have let it run for a corner but he decided to take it on the volley and smashed it past Mottram in the Winsford goal.
