Spennymoor 1-0 New Mills - report

A resolute defensive display by New Mills, against one of the Evo-Stik First Division North’s promotion contenders, wasn’t enough to earn a point for Roy Soule’s side.

Spennymoor are a potent attacking force and created chance after chance against the Millers.

The hosts’ first real opening came after confusion between Ashley and Gaskin with the loose ball being hit well over the open goal.

Aaron Chalmers then lost out to Liam Henderson, who beat Gaskin but shot wide.

Just before the half hour, Ashley was forced to make a point-blank save from Nathan Fisher before the visitors saw Antoine-Clarke exit the action due to injury.

Chris Mason then flashed a shot wide for the hosts before they finally opened the scoring a few minutes before the interval.

Andrew Stephenson hit a shot over from twenty yards out, but Ashley at full stretch could only get a hand to it and in doing so parried the ball into the corner of the net.

The Millers’ first attempt on goal came in the 56th minute when Forde’s header was easily collected by the keeper.

In the last ten minutes, New Mills seemed to realise that they could get something out of the game and Fitton’s low angled shot from the left was kept out by Adam McHugh.

Grimshaw then almost nicked a point but his free-kick in almost the last action of the game zipped just wide of the post.

Millers host Ossett Town on Monday evening.

New Mills: Ashley, Antoine-Clarke (Ramwell), Moss (Fitton), L. Chalmers (Welsby), Gaskin, A. Chalmers, Hopper, Forde, Landregan, Kirby, Grimshaw.
