Wilson was given his marching orders deep into added time as Buxton slipped to a 2-1 defeat against the Leicestershire outfit, who began the day just three points above them in the table.

The result extended Buxton’s sequence of disappointing results and they now sit 15th in the 24-team table with 40 points after 11 wins, seven draws and 12 defeats to their name so far.

In contrast, Barwell were full of confidence after only two defeats in their previous ten games, and they made all the early running on a heavy pitch, creating chances for Matt Stenson and Craig Reid.

They duly took the lead in the 21st minute when Stenson did well to chase down a lost cause and won the ball before rounding goalkeeper Jan Budtz and pulling it back for Brady Hickey to smash home.

Stung by the goal, Buxton grew into the contest and began to fashion opportunities of their own. Both Liam Hardy and Ricky Ravenhill had shots blocked in the box before the equaliser arrived in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot. When Joe McGee’s shot thumped a post, a foul was committed as a sea of bnodies rushed to latch on to the rebound. Prolific marksman Hardy took responsibility for the spot-kick and sent goalkeeper Liam Castle the wrong way for his 29th goal of the season and his 97th for the club.

Barwell recovered to regain the lead before the break with what proved to be the matchwinner. It stemmed from an error by Budtz, who fumbled a shot after a free-kick and allowed Stenson to follow in and fire home.

The hosts remained on top in the second half when they should have capitalised on chances to see out the game. Instead Budtz redeemed himself with some terrific saves to keep Barwell out. He prevented Stenson, Hickey and Reid adding to the scoreline, pushing one effort on to the bar and stopping another from point-blank range.
