North West Counties League Premier Division
Ashton Athletic 1, Glossop North End 0
AFTER the drama of a midweek FA Cup replay, it was back to league action for the Hillmen on Saturday as they travelled to Brocstedes Park to face Ashton Athletic.
Paul Colgan was forced into a last minute reshuffle after Lee McGregor was injured in the warm up and Daley Rothwell was promoted from the bench, with Alex Elliot dropping to right back.
North End forced several goalbound efforts in the early stages. Andy Sensale was a nuisance up front, and he was supported by Callum Harrison and Ben Connolly who pushed forward at every opportunity.
The final member of the frontline, Sam Marshall, was an ever-willing runner, and his pace was always a threat down the right.
The sucker punch arrived on 35 minutes when a pacy break ended with Ashton’s Matthew Ward cutting inside and calmly slotting the ball past Ben Proctor.
Dean McGregor was introduced at the start of the second half to replace Harrison and reform the partnership with Sensale which had impressed in the early season.
Glossop started brightly, but the home side were a danger on the break and Proctor was the busier of the two keepers.
The Hillmen forced a series of five corners, the first resulting in a fine save after Sensale’s chip was destined for the back of the net.
The impressive Ash Smallwood, playing at centre half, was called into action in the 72nd minute to clear off his own line after another home team break.
After both sides had penalty appeals waved away, Glossop finally got the ball in the back of the Ashton net on 88 minutes via their goalkeeper’s gloves, but the strike was ruled out after the referee spotted an infringement.
