Football is currently on hold across the nation with uncertainty over when it will restart and what form the truncated season will take.

But Birch believes deciding the season on a PPG basis would not work due to how few games have been played and believes the season will not be finished.

“We are really disappointed it's been a stop start and I can't see it restarting again now until next season,” he said.

“We were having a decent season, but it is the right thing to do. The world needs to stay safe.

“On a football front I think that will be it. I don't want the season to end like this because I’m a big supporter of seeing the league end correctly.

“I can't see how they will finish it. We have played six league games so you can’t do a fair PPG off that.

“Last year we had Vauxhall Motors who had already won the league so for the season to be voided again would also be disappointing for clubs like them.

“I would like to see the season finished in some way just so it’s fair for everyone.”

Birch is now keen to take the positives out of a season which saw New Mills show signs of improvement.

“We have got ambitions to be up there fighting for promotion and we’re not far off a team that can do that, it's tough having the rug pulled under you,” he added.

“We can take bits out of this season. We are still missing a little bit here and there and need to strengthen to cement our promotion aims.

“We are looking solid at the back and have a cracking goalkeeper, one of the best in the league.

“I can take a bit out of what we did going forward.”
