Meakin’s 30th goal nets vital win for the Millers at Colne

Colne 1

New Mills 2

New Mills strengthened their position with arguably their biggest three points of the season last Tuesday (March 29).

The Millers made the worst possible start as they conceded in only the second minute. The defence was split wide open by Andy Tinker’s pass and lively winger Danny Boyle confidently beat Ben Procter.

The game turned in a 60-second spell around the midway point in the half. Boyle’s rapid pace saw him escape the back line once again but this time Procter was his equal with a fine low stop.

Almost immediately, Chris Hirst’s through pass found Luke Horrocks who took the ball in his stride and assuredly clipped the ball into the corner of Jamie Scott’s net.

With the minutes ticking down to the interval, the visitors crucially grabbed the lead after being awarded a penalty. Overlapping full back Nick Swirad was clearly felled in the corner of the box by Joe Garvin, and Carlos Meakin kept his cool to send the keeper the wrong way for his 30th goal of the season.

Colne’s full back Ted Cockett tried his luck from distance early in the second half but Procter tipped his effort fairly comfortably over the crossbar.

Procter’s counterpart had a series of Adam Mather corners to deal with at the other end with the home goal surviving more by luck than judgement on certain occasions. Scott did produce a superb reflex save to deny Meakin.

With full time approaching, substitute Ismail Akoya went within inches of wrapping up the game when he latched onto Horrocks’ pass, but his chip over the advancing keeper unluckily hit the upright.

There was almost a dramatic late twist two minutes into stoppage time when Boyle’s pass sent Ted Cockett clear of The Millers’ back line but Procter smartly saved with his legs.

New Mills: Procter, Swirad, Mather, Rowe, Coyne, Innes, Meakin, Pickford, L Grandison (Akoya), Hirst (Monaghan), Horrocks (Carey). Unused sub: K Grandison.
