Buxton Town skipper Matt Stanway rescued a point in an entertaining game between two of the Hope Valley League A Division’s promotion chasers on Saturday.
Baslow came close in the opening few minutes when Joe Pilkington’s free kick evaded everybody and Ryan Haworth had to be alert to keep the ball out.
Town were dangerous on the counter attack with Jamie Prince and Jake Hobson doing well in the wide areas, with both putting testing balls into the box.
Haworth remained the busier of the two keepers and did well at the feet of Ben Norman.
In the 20th minute Town took the lead when they were awarded what appeared a soft penalty as Scott Heathcote was adjudged to have been impeded in the box and Ben Richardson netted the spot kick.
Town’s lead didn’t last long and a long ball was allowed to bounce and Phil Morton used his strength to hold off James Wilding before rolling the ball past Haworth.
Stone was denied a goal for offside before heading a Prince cross wide and Prince was the provider again following a great piece of footwork he then picked out Stanway who glanced his header wide.
Craig Owen did well on the right before finding Prince who gave Town the lead for a second time when his over hit cross caught Stannard out landed in the top corner.
Prince then delivered another good ball to the far post but Hobson couldn’t direct his header goal wards.
Town were very slow out of the blocks in the second half and James Towers drew Baslow level as he pounced on a loose ball following a superb double save from Haworth.
It wasn’t long before the home side took the lead when a deep ball from the right caught Haworth out and Norman prodded the ball home.
The goal seemed to wake Town up and they dominated the final half hour, first Hobson came close and then Stone thumped his header against the bar.
Stannard then made an unbelievable save when Prince’s corner was met by a thumping header from Leon Owen but Stannard denied him.
Leon Owen fired a volley wide and great work from Craig Owen down the left saw him jink inside the area before putting the ball across the face of Baslow’s goal.
In the 76th minute Town were level when a great corner from Prince saw Stannard under pressure punch the ball into the air and Stanway rose highest to force the equaliser.
The visitors finished strongly and Craig Owen had a strong shout for a penalty turned away as his shot appeared to strike a defenders hand and Sam Butler shot over following a game of pinball in the Baslow area.
Tom Brooke did well down the right before a late flurry of Baslow corners caused Town concern and the game ended with a well earned point.
