Local lad nets Silkmen deal

The 18-year-old, who can operate in defence or midfield, was handed his first pro contract by Town manager John Askey after impressing in 2013-14.

Cowan played for Buxton Juniors and New Mills as a youngster, before stepping up to join the Silkmen’s youth team at the age of 15.

He then progressed through the club’s former centre-of-excellence and impressed sufficiently enough to be offered a pro deal last month.

He made two appearances at the end of last season, and started the final game of the campaign; a 1-0 win at Alfreton.

Cowan will be hoping to be part of Macclesfield’s plans as they head to Buxton tomorrow night (Friday).

The youngster makes a return to the area and will be aiming to impress against Martin McIntosh’s side in the pre-season friendly.

It was last summer that Cowan was first drafted into the senior squad.

Askey said at the time: “He’s done well for us this year and been in and around the first team for a couple of friendlies and in all our reserve games this season, and not looked out of place.

“He’s at the right sort of age to be getting involved and he has progressed recently.”

Town finished 15th in the Conference Premier last season.

They reached the third round of the FA Cup, where they held Championship side Sheffield Wednesday to a replay.

In the subsequent game at Hillsborough, Macc were overpowered 4-1.
