Rossendale United 1
New Mills 2
NEW MILLS secured another hard-fought three points on their Lancashire travels as they defeated Rossendale United on Tuesday (March 22).
Daniel Douglas-Pringle opened the scoring for the Millers after a long ball caused problems for the Rossendale defence. Douglas-Pringle controlled the ball beautifully and expertly lobbed the onrushing keeper to find the corner of the net.
The home side’s 34th-minute equaliser came courtesy of poor defensive play from New Mills. Following the award of a throw-in deep in their own territory, Luke Horrocks decided to take a quick throw which caught Liam Coyne on the back foot.
As a result, the centre half committed a foul on a quick thinking Rossendale striker just outside the box and Jamie Baguley’s subsequent free kick was deflected past Ben Procter.
Skipper for the evening Leon Grandison eventually scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 67th minute. Syd Pickford’s ball over the top found Grandison whose pace and strength saw him stay half a yard in front of the chasing defenders and he then proceeded to clinically curl the ball past Jamie Waite from 12 yards.
The closing stages were nerve-jangling as the home side pushed for an equaliser but never seriously tested Ben Procter. Both sets of players deserve great credit for producing such an entertaining game.
New Mills: Procter, Bowler, Horrocks, Swirad, Coyne, Hirst, Innes, Pickford, L Grandison, Douglas-Pringle (Mather), Carey (K Grandison).
