Kidsgrove go goal crazy at Church Lane

New Mills AFC 0, Kidsgrove Athletic 6

NEW MILLS were hit for six in their final home league game of the season as Kidsgrove Athletic went goal crazy at Church Lane on Saturday.

With James Coates suspended, James Taylor stepped up from the reserves but any hopes of keeping a clean sheet were dashed after only 11 minutes when Liam Shotton used his strength to hold off the challenge of centre-half Nick Swirad and produced a delicate finish over the advancing keeper.

The Millers had the perfect opportunity to draw level in the 25th minute when Steve Brannan was adjudged to have handled Luke Horrocks’ cross, but Ben Deegan could only sky the penalty over the crossbar.

Justin Pickering had the unenviable job of replacing Carlos Meakin in midfield but he very nearly produced an effort that the home skipper would have been proud of himself. The former collected Deegan’s flick and fired an excellent shot which Steve Hodgson did well to turn away for a corner.

After curling a shot onto the roof of the net moments earlier, Kidsgrove’s Dave Walker quickly redeemed himself when he doubled the visitors lead six minutes before the interval. Capitalising on a defensive slip, Walker was left one on one with Taylor and again another assured finish saw the blameless keeper beaten.

The least said about New Mills’ second half performance the better as Kidsgrove ran riot in the attacking third of the pitch, scoring three goals in a ten-minute spell.

Liam Shotton scored his second of the afternoon when he had the fairly simple task of finishing Danny Griggs’ cross at the back post from close range. Paul Taylor then curled an excellent effort from distance past the stranded Taylor and into the top corner.

This was quickly followed by Shotton completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Dave Chadwick was penalised for a push.

The demoralised Millers’ thoroughly miserable afternoon was completed 13 minutes from time when Danny Griggs fired another unstoppable effort past Taylor.

New Mills: Taylor, Bowler (Millen), Pickford, Barras (Moss), Chadwick, Swirad, Pickering (Needham), Lonsdale, Deegan, Grandison, Horrocks.
