He ran at defenders and rode challenges but ultimately overran the ball and his weaker right-foot shot was comfortably saved.

Whaley’s Jason Broome, Adam Barlow and Dan Gilbride worked tirelessly across the middle, denying Gresley time on the ball.

Bill Sutton and Jason Broome both skied efforts over the bar from 18 yards as an evenly-matched first half ended goalless with Gresley shading possession but having fewer chances.

Gresley applied pressure playing down the hill and ten minutes into the second half Danny Quinn went close before Tattersall tipped a long-range effort over the bar.

Gregory linked well with Dan Gilbride before Sam Leadbetter saw his shot well saved.

Broome played a threatening long high ball over the Gresley defence and Leadbetter, harassed on both sides, raced through to chest down on the edge of the box and unleash a volley just over the bar..

Gresley put top scorer Matt Melbourne and regular first teamers Sean Phillips and Reece Morris on to try to win the game, however Whaley’s back four of Bill Sutton, Rob Newton, Will Bailey and Broome stood firm.

Eventually Gresleytook the lead through Melbourne after three attempts were blocked.

Whaley introduced Jack Kelly who was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty when brought down.

With minutes remaining Whaley’s pressure paid off when Gilbride swung in a free kick towards the back post.

It rebounded off a Gresley defender, hit Broome’s hip and went into the net.
