New Mills consolidated second place in the Evo-Stik Division One North league table with a four-goal victory over Harrogate Railway on Saturday.

Chris Luby continued his good run of recent form by netting twice from close range in a four-minute spell during the first half.

The in-form striker firstly neatly converted Nicky Platt’s precise pass and then tidied up James Hampson’s effort at the back post after the Millers forwards had escaped Harrogate’s offside trap.

Luby should have secured his hat-trick seven minutes after the interval but hit the post after rounding goalkeeper Sam Dobbs.

The rebound fell to strike partner Hampson who unbelievably hit virtually the same part of the upright with a fiercely-struck effort.

To their credit, Harrogate never gave up and went close to reducing the deficit on two separate occasions when Jesus Samuel Martin-Farina had a shot kicked off the line by David Fitzpatrick and then Patrick McGuire showed excellent technique when hitting a volley which nearly snapped the crossbar.

Despite those scares, The Millers were always in control of the game and wrapped up victory with two additional goals.

The first came just before the hour when Sam Egerton converted Daryl Weston’s cutback from the byline with a cheeky back heel.

The afternoon’s proceedings were completed in the last minute of normal time when Fitzpatrick’s cross was met by a thumping Michael Fish header

New Mills: Stevenson, Weston (Wilkinson), Fitzpatrick, Innes (Graham), Bowler, Egerton, Platt, Young, Luby, Hampson (Fish), Battersby. Unused subs: Grimshaw, Moore.
