Squires Gate 2

Glossop North End 2

Glossop missed an opportunity to clinch victory in their final league game of the season after drawing 2-2 against Squires Gate on Saturday.

The wind played an important part in the opening goal. Jon McIlwaine cleared the ball upfield, which floated over the defensive line, and was latched onto by Darren Hamilton. Hamilton slid the ball to Sam Hind who smashed it past Neil Beesley at his near post.

Squires Gate should have been level when Alex McKendrick had a free header in the six-yard box, but the midfielder headed wide.

The home team found an equaliser courtesy of left-back Zachary Thomas. Thomas poked the ball past McIlwaine after a lapse in the Glossop defence.

With only minutes to half time, the Hillmen restored their lead through winger Hamilton. Niall Cannon beat two players on the right side and drilled a ball across the box and Hamilton had an easy tap-in.

There were very few chances in the second half until substitute Rob Hartshorne had a chance to put the game beyond doubt. Hartshorne and Steve Heaton found themselves against a solitary defender, but Hartshorne failed to keep his composure at the vital time, allowing the defender to make the interception.

The equaliser did however come in the second minute of stoppage time. A weak shot from the edge of the area by Thomas Benfield couldn’t be held by McIlwaine who palmed the ball to the side of his goal.

Squires Gate were quick to pounce on the mistake and fired the ball back across the box where a grateful Louis Mayers bundled it into the net.
