New Mills 1, Guiseley 5

NEW MILLS’ final pre-season friendly saw them defeated by an excellent Guiseley side.

Despite the Blue Square North side creating a couple of good opportunities in the early exchanges of Thursday evening’s encounter, it was the Millers who took the lead in the 12th minute with a stunning Carlos Meakin long-distance strike which flew past the helpless Steve Drench.

The visitors weren’t to be denied for long and they stamped their authority on the game, scoring three well-crafted goals before the interval.

Firstly Josh Wilson equalised from close range just past the midway point of the opening half, and then a quickly taken corner kick routine saw Gavin Rothery confidently finish from eight yards.

Ex-Guiseley keeper James Coates then kept his former club at bay but could do nothing about an excellent James Walshaw header as the half-time whistle approached.

Despite trailing, New Mills started the second half positively and Steve Moore and Luke Horrocks both missed the target from very presentable chances afforded to them in the penalty area.

Guiseley substitute Nicky Boshell appeared in the right place at the right time in a goalmouth scramble to extend the visitors’ lead around the hour mark, and the final goal of the evening arrived in the dying moments when Boshell turned provider as his cross was decisively swept home by Danny Ellis.

New Mills starting XI: Coates, Bowler, Fitzpatrick, Cotton, Chadwick, Headley, Meakin, Young, Douglas-Pringle, Moore, Horrocks.
