Five of last season’s squad have put pen to paper and re-signed for Buxton FC, following a week which saw the shock departure of fans’ favourite Marc Roberts to FC Halifax Town.
The long-serving duo of player/assistant manager Scott Maxfield and right-back Grant Black, with more than 500 appearances between them, have both signed on for a seventh season at the Silverlands, while another key member of the squad, skipper and midfield dynamo Steve Istead, has committed himself to another campaign.
Fellow midfielder Neil Stevens, with over 200 Buxton appearances to his name, has also extended his second spell with the club.
The first of the local contingent to sign is left-back Charlie Johnson, who played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat by Chesterfield and has impressed in early-season training.
Meanwhile, two months after signing permanently for the Bucks, centre-back Roberts has transferred to Blue Square Premier side FC Halifax Town for an undisclosed fee. The player marked his debut on Saturday with two headed goals in a 7-0 thrashing of Scarborough.
Vice Chairman Tony Tomlinson said: “Marc was a free agent when he signed for us in May. He didn’t have to sign and could simply have waited for a higher-status club to approach him, a situation he knew was always likely to happen given the consistent interest shown in him last season.
“Instead, Marc chose to sign for the manager who has helped him so much to develop and for the club where he has thrived, but on the clear understanding that we would not stand in his way should a much higher status club make an approach.
“We have kept our word, and now our club will benefit financially from the transfer.”
