Evo-Stik Premier Division: Buxton FC 2, Blyth Spartans 0
A FLUKE goal by goalkeeper Ian Deakin set Buxton FC on their way to a comfortable win over Blyth Spartans.
Showing no signs of tiredness following their midweek FA Cup heroics, the Bucks took the lead in the 20th minute when Deakin’s high kick from well inside his own half took a wicked bounce over The Spartans’ red-faced custodian Conor Grant.
Mark Reed doubled Buxton’s lead 12 minutes later when he beat his marker to a Grant Black cross from the right to calmly head home.
The Spartans rallied in the second half, but created little to worry Deakin as the Buxton defence held firm.
Martin McIntosh’s men are now unbeaten in six matches across all competitions, and the Bucks boss commented after the game: “I thought it was a really good solid performance by the guys. Everyone did their job, and they all deserve a pat on the back for their fitness and work rate.
“In the first half we played some good football. I thought we stretched the game and got the full-backs high up the pitch. Grant Black has been phenomenal for us with regards to that.
“We got a bit of a break with the first goal, but I still think had that not gone in we created enough to win the match. Reedy had a couple of chances and we could have been leading by more then what we were at half-time.”
Buxton are next in action on Tuesday evening when they make the trip to Coronation Park to take on Eastwood Town (kick-off 7.45pm).
Buxton: Deakin, Black, Sandwith, Istead, Haggerty, Roberts, Keane, Towey (Stevens, 78), Reed (Maxfield, 78), Morris (Hopkins, 90+1), Duncum. Attendance: 342.
