Buxton 1 Burton Albion 1
Buxton drew a competitive pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening against a Burton side featuring several vastly experienced players.
But it was ‘keeper and captain, Stephen Bywater, a veteran of 300-plus league appearances for such as West Ham, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday who gifted the Bucks a second minute opener.
Bywater’s inexplicably sliced clearance fell invitingly for Lee Bennett, who could not miss.
Buxton held the lead for over an hour thanks to sterling defensive work but Lucas Akins, recently an Albion leading marksman, equalised in the 70th minute.
Buxton stayed firm thereafter versus a most capable team similar in personnel to the one which had won 2-1 at Matlock Town on Saturday.
Memorable incidents from another very satisfactory work-out were two outstanding saves, first by Bywater to deny Nicky Walker and then by Jan Budtz to thwart Marcus Harness.
On Saturday Chesterfield will be the visitors to Silverlands, having won recently 3-1 at Matlock and 3-0 at Ilkeston last Saturday when their scorers were veteran Richie Humphreys, Jake Beesley and Ched Evans.
A Buxton FC spokesman said: “As ever, the club expresses its thanks to respective managers, Nigel Clough and Danny Wilson, for their help in arranging such attractive fixtures for us.”
