Derbyshire Senior Cup
Buxton FC 2, Long Eaton United 0
BUXTON FC picked up their first win under new manager Scott Maxfield last Wednesday night when they beat Long Eaton United to secure a place in the Derbyshire Senior Cup quarter final.
First-half goals from Sam Johnson and Neil Stevens were enough to seal Buxton’s victory at the Silverlands and earn them an away tie against Ilkeston in the next round.
The Bucks were ahead within 18 minutes when Johnson headed home following a corner.
And Johnson almost added a second on 39 minutes with a well-struck, long-range shot but visiting keeper Ross Whalin parried well.
Stevens added Buxton’s second goal a minute later with a deflected shot that bypassed not only Long Eaton’s defence but also caught keeper Whalin off guard.
The visitors had a couple of decent breaks in the first period but failed to threaten.
After the restart, Long Eaton created their best opportunity of the game but two excellent blocks from Buxton keeper Scott Hartley kept the Bucks on top.
Jack Bradbury, who was one of three players making the step-up from Buxton under-19s for the night, found himself in a good position with only keeper Whalin to beat but his effort found only the back wall on 58 minutes.
Just after the hour mark, Johnson was denied by a one-footed save on the line from Whalin before Stevens was also denied by the visiting keeper on 72 minutes.
The last opportunity of the match fell to Mark Reed in the dying minutes but his injury time attempt at lobbing Whalin was slightly off target and instead saw the ball creep over the net and out.
Buxton: Hartley, Moloney, Wilde, Williams, Liversidge, Stevens, Heywood (Taylor, 62), Towey (Ridley, 70), Reed, Johnson (Lugsden, 62), Bradbury. Attendance: 139.
