FA Youth Cup Second Qualifying Round: Buxton 1, Matlock Town 2
THE YOUNG Bucks started well, with Josh Bridge and Gipu Felix-George having the best of a few early chances, but as the half wore on the pace of Matlock’s two strikers began to cause the home defence problems and John Stanway had to be alert to keep the score level.
The game became open, with both sides playing good football, however it was Matlock who broke the deadlock, and then Declan Jenkins found space in the box with some neat footwork before calmly rolling the ball past Stanway to put the visitors 2-0 ahead at half-time.
Buxton looked more dangerous in the second half after a change of formation, and they pulled a goal back on 62 minutes when Daniel Gilbride curled a stunning free-kick into the far top corner.
The hosts now looked like scoring with every attack, and Gilbride almost equalised when he curled another free-kick over the wall only for the Matlock keeper to pull off an exceptional save.
Despite throwing everything at the Matlock goal in the closing stages, the equaliser never came.
