SECOND-HALF goals from Neil Stevens and Mark Reed gave Buxton a well-deserved victory over Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders North Ferriby United on Saturday.

Played on a heavy pitch at the Silverlands which had passed a mid-morning inspection, this was a very open, end-to-end game, providing plenty of pre-festive entertainment.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Stevens gave the Bucks the lead just six minutes into the second half when Lee Morris laid on an inviting ball which the midfielder drilled past goalkeeper Adam Nicklin.

Substitute Reed, on his return to the side from injury, sealed the victory eight minutes from the end when he headed past a red-faced Nicklin, whose attempted clearance of a deflected Grant Black free-kick saw him push the ball onto the crossbar and into the path of the awaiting striker.

Buxton goalkeeper Ian Deakin, meanwhile, put in a solid performance to earn his side’s clean sheet, the highlight being a point-blank block in the second half to deny Ryan Kendal and, minutes later, diving to thwart Danny Clarke.

Bucks boss Martin McIntosh said after the game: “I’m delighted with that performance. We’ve beaten the top of the league team, who are spending double our money, and I think we were well worthy of winning the match.

“I think we had more about us today. We were confident as a team and we showed more character than them, and I think that’s why we won the game.”

He added: “I’ve got 16/17 really honest players and they are all doing absolutely fantastic for me and Maxfield, but we need to kick on from here and see if we can push for the top-five.”

Buxton’s next Evo-Stik League fixture is a trip to Whitby Town next Saturday, December 22 (kick-off 3pm).
