North West Counties League Premier Division: Padiham 0, Glossop North End 1
THE HILLMEN took a large step towards promotion on Saturday with a hard-fought victory that could be the turning point in their season.
North End got the game off to a terrible start when Sam Hind received a red card for an off the ball incident, having been judged to have elbowed a defender as they were jostling for position.
The Hillmen were not phased however, dominated possession and created a variety of chances. A succession of set pieces in the first half failed to test Joshua Boothman in the Padiham goal.
Padiham were unable to beat the again impressive Ben Proctor. Samuel Heap found time and space in the North End box but Proctor closed the angle down well and saved with his feet.
Glossop got the only goal of the game in the 35th minute when Daley Rothwell was pushed in the back in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Adam Oakes stepped up and found the bottom corner to give the Hillmen a deserved lead at the break.
North End continued to attack in the second half, recent signing Richard Chetcuti fizzing a shot just over the bar.
As the final whistle approached, the ten men of Glossop were pinned back in their own half and problems were worsened when Darren Hamilton was stretchered off with a broken ankle.
The Hillmen had a resilient nine men on the pitch in the final minutes who defied an equalising goal with last-ditch and courageous defending.
