Blue Square Premier side too strong for Millers

New Mills AFC 0, Hyde FC 2

TWO SET-PIECES were the difference between New Mills and Hyde as football returned to Church Lane after the summer break.

The Blue Square Bet Premier newcomers fielded a strong side in last Thursday’s fixture as they prepared for their debut season at the highest level of non-league football.

The visitors took the lead midway through the opening half. The Millers defence failed to pick up men at a corner kick and after a cross was flashed back across the six-yard box, an unmarked Luke Ashworth guided a header home from close range.

The lead was doubled on the stroke of the interval when Michael Bowler was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. David Poole converted the penalty.

Although James Coates made some excellent saves, New Mills did little wrong in the first half but lacked a goalscoring threat in the final third of the pitch.

The introduction of the returning Steve Moore livened things up a little after the break and his fellow replacement Ross Needham very nearly reduced the arrears with a clever chip over the keeper but the ball unluckily cannoned back into play off the crossbar.

Hyde also hit the woodwork in the second half but there was no further addition to the scoreline in what proved to be a fairly entertaining game by pre-season friendly standards.

New Mills starting XI: Coates, Headley, Brackenbridge, Bowler, Chadwick, Pickering, Meakin, Young, Noon, Cox, Horrocks.
