Askey’s late winner fires young Bucks into next round of FA Youth Cup

FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round

Buxton U19s 2, Ibstock United 1

BUXTON Bluestar Under-19s got their first ever FA Youth Cup campaign off to a winning start with a deserved 2-1 victory over Ibstock United at the Silverlands last Wednesday.

The hosts started the game brightly and after only seven minutes Buxton scored when Cameron Higgingbottom turned on the edge of the area to calmly roll the ball into the far corner out of the keeper’s reach.

Buxton then sat back and allowed Ibstock back into the game, but with no further goals Buxton led 1-0 at half-time.

The second half started where the first had left off with both teams playing well. Ibstock’s tricky left-winger was giving the Buxton defence problems, but they stood strong with John Stanway having a fairly quiet evening in goal.

Sam Davies nearly put the home side 2-0 up, but his powerful downward header was brilliantly saved.

Ibstock flooded forward in search of an equaliser, and with four minutes remaining a dangerously whipped ball was headed home at close range.

But with extra time looming, new Buxton signing Jacob Askey, on as a second-half substitute for the injured Harrison French, lost his marker to find space in the box and he smashed the ball into the Ibstock net to give Buxton a deserved 2-1 victory.

This excellent result sees Buxton through to the First Qualifying Round away at Arnold Town, the fixture scheduled for Monday September 17 (kick-off 7.45pm).
