Arresting finish from super-sub Sherriff

A late Dennis Sherriff header rescued a North West Counties League Division One point for New Mills in a 2-2 home draw against Nelson.

Unbeaten New Mills dominated for long periods, but failed to kill off a spirited Lancashire club who gained their first points of the season after four consecutive defeats.

A managerial change saw much-needed experience added to Nelson, who presented a tough test.

The home side started well and created early chances. George Blackwell, who impressed with his trickery and intelligent wing play, was unfortunate not to give his side the lead after three minutes, but his curling shot after a jinking run was palmed away by Harry Wissett.

In the 25th minute Sam Scott headed over from close range following a right wing corner.

Blackwell had another chance to give his side the lead on the half hour, but shot wide from the edge of the area.

Ten minutes before the interval the Millers finally got the goal their play deserved.

A long-range Arron Kirk shot was parried by Wissett and Callum Scott slotted home the rebound to mark his first appearance of the season with a goal.

The visitors’ response was immediate as a cross from the right was powerfully headed past Dean Williams by Alex Mullen.

Filling in as an emergency striker for the unavailable Nathan Neequaye and Ed Driver, Sam Scott went close twice in quick succession.

On 61 minutes his volley from an Arron Kirk cross was blocked by a defender before, a minute later, his shot was deflected wide.

Another Kirk cross was volleyed wide by substitute Michael Jones.

With ten minutes to go the Millers were punished for their wastefulness as Anthony McLoughlin scored.

Millers boss Calum Sykes replaced Callum Scott and Adam Kay with youngster Jordan Pendlebury and striker Sherriff.

He was rewarded for the bold substitutions when Bobby Lofthouse floated in a free-kick and Sherriff escaped his marker to head home powerfully at the far post with his first touch since joining the action.

In injury time the home side could have clinched the three points after Pendlebury wriggled away from the defence at a set piece, but his header drifted wide.
