Buxton Amateur Boxing Club fighter Irvin Magno has been crowned Derbyshire champion.
Magno was matched against Spire Boxing Academy’s Kris Davey in the county finals of the National Junior ABA Championships, drawn in the Lightweight 63.5kg category.
Both lads entered the bout expecting a hard contest after a previous meeting, and got exactly that in what proved to be a four-round war.
This contest proved to be a top-class display of amateur boxing with Magno demonstrating excellent footwork and hand speed in the first round.
Davey pressured and shut Magno down in round two, as the Buxton man slowed.
Rounds three and four saw both boxers working non-stop, Magno had success with his straight right, with Davey working in close. This was a difficult and close contest that proved well worthy of any area final.
Magno was deservedly awarded the Derbyshire area championship.
Younger brother Giann contested his fourth cadet contest in Nottingham and continued to impress, facing an opponent with limited impact against his speed and shot accuracy.
When required, Magno defended and blocked before landing with flurries of punches, making it a double of wins for the family.
Buxton’s Adam Sircar also boxed in the Nottingham show and lost in a close contest from the judges scorecards.
Joe Lampard passed through to the Midland county rounds of the ABA’s in the 67kg Welterweight category, and was pulled out of his arranged warm-up contest in Nottingham after his opponent came in vastly over the weight limit.
