Chinley youngster Daniel Porteous skiied his way to third spot in the under-16 category during the first round of the GB indoor Telemark race series at the indoor snow slope Chill Factore in Trafford recently.
Daniel, who attends Hope Valley College, took advantage of coaching from Chris Stewart, three times British Champion, at the North West Telemark Festival.
He then raced to an impressive third-placed finish on the Sunday.
Telemark ski racing consists of two runs down a slalom course with a jump in the middle, followed by an uphill skating section to the finish.
Daniel, who was representing Manchester Cross Country Ski Club, took full advantage of being on his home slope at Chill Factore.
His second run was particularly good as he landed his jump in a strong “Telemark” position (One ski forward of the other).
Daniel regularly competes in indoor Alpine slalom races.
However, he has really caught the Telemark ski bug since trying it out for the first time last year.
He is training hard for the other three races in the series which are to be held at Tamworth, Glasgow and Hemel Hempstead respectively over the summer months.
