Hayfield and Newton U13’s competed for the Medlock Cup on Monday and the game ended with honours even.

Hayfield having been put into bat stuttered to 82-8 with only Charlie Craig (26) and Harry Howarth (15) reaching double figures in the damp conditions.

The pick of Newton’s bowlers was Callum Wignal, who took 4-4 over during his three overs.

Hayfield managed to restrict Newton reply in the early stages, keeping the run rate down, but when Alex Camm (25) and Callum Wignal (19) pushed the score on the game swayed in Newton’s favour.

Hayfield, however, refused to give up and some excellent fielding, catches and runouts restricted the Newton charge.

Charlotte Peacock claimed two important wickets and then Harry Howarth, who had kept wicket for the first 10 overs, claimed two wickets in his first over. With the scores tied bowled Newton’s last man out to the delight of the away contingent.

The decision was taken to call the game a tie and share the trophy between the clubs.
