Buxton seniors take part in gruelling final race

The senior women’s race was contested over a tough five mile route consisting of two small loops of the park, followed by two large loops taking in Vernon Park and requiring the runners to tackle a tough climb on each lap.

The top three finishers for Buxton Ladies were Sheila Bradley, 95th in 44:03, Kate Ledin, 104th in 44:52 and Kate Phillips, 107th in 45:05.

The race also finalised the positions in the over series, with the runners best four finishes from the five races counting.

Kate Phillips finishing sixth with Rachel Dowle 11th in the F45 category and Heather Fryer-Winder was 5th L50.

The senior men raced one small loop and three large loops, totalling approximately 6 miles with 3 assents of the tough climb through the trees.

Alasdair Campbell further cemented his position as Buxton’s top cross-country runner with a terrific 6th place finish in 36:15. Nat Winfield, 34th in 39:19 and Rob White, 54th in 40:41, followed him home.

In the final series results, Winfield finished ninth with Richard Bouglas 45th in the Senior Men 20-39 category, Andy Lidstone was =5th M50, with Pete Bailey 10th M55.

On Sunday, Ben Light and Hayden Alcock raced in the Cancer Research Winter Run. The flat route in and around the Sport City complex in Manchester was made slightly more testing by the cold and snow flurries, but both men ran excellent races.

Light finished in second place overall in a field of over 1650 runners, setting an unofficial new 10K PB of 34:09. Alcock also set a new PB of 37:42 and finished 20th.

Also on Sunday, and in equally testing weather, the daughter and stepfather duo of Amy Clark and Jon Sewell tackled the Liversedge Half Marathon. The tough route encompasses 970ft of elevation and wasn’t improved by the blizzard conditions, but this didn’t stop both Clark and Sewell putting in impressive performances.

Sewell finished 52nd and 7th M40 in 1:30.21 with Clark 156th overall in 1:43.32; 488 ran.”
