A power lifter from Buxton has his sights set on becoming a world champion after winning a European crown.

Joe Brown, 28, who is a personal trainer and works at a gym near Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens, only began power-lifting this year but became British Bench Champion at the BodyPower event in Birmingham in May having lifted 170kg.

That qualified him for the European finals in Le Pont-de-Claix in France, where he went on to lift 177.5kg to again become champion.

He will now go on to the World Championship finals which take place on Sunday (5th), this year being held in Manchester.

Joe’s girlfriend Liv Smith says it’s a reward for lots of hard work.

She said: “He is fairly new to it all having simply decided to have a go at it and see what happened, and it’s gone really well.

“He trains five or six days a week, sometimes twice a day and particularly in the run up to competitions, and follows a bench programme.

“He’s lived in Buxton all his life so the fact the worlds will be in Manchester is a bonus because he’s self-funded and travelling to various events can be costly. Last year’s world championships were in Florida.”

Joe, who competes in the 80-90kg category, is welcoming any sponsorship that may be available to help him cover the costs of training, competing and travelling.
