Athletes from across UK descend for Peak District Triathlon

The second Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth took place on Sunday 28th June with the picturesque setting attracting athletes from all over the UK as nearly 500 athletes crossed.

The new run and the amended cycle route, with the challenge of the demanding hill, were very well received and the event was hailed a huge success by organisers, athletes and spectators.

The Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth is set in stunning surroundings in the middle of the Peak District and offers options of a sprint and standard distance race.

The swim took place in the river Derwent, starting from the beautiful 18th century Paine’s Bridge and taking swimmers out and back in front of Chatsworth House.

The new cycle route was a single loop taking in some of the most beautiful scenes in the Peak District, and the run route was amended to include an extra loop beyond the Hunting Tower for the standard distance athletes to feature more of Chatsworth’s landmarks.

In the standard distance race Paul Hawkins clocked the fastest time in the water and kept extending his lead to take the winning title in a time of 01:56:16. Runner-up Adam Robinson finished in 02:02:24 and Adam’s brother, U20 athlete James Robinson, took third place.

Annica Goddard, of SY Tri, won the women’s race in a time of 02:26:07, ahead of Hannah Bridger (Adwick Club), who crossed the finish line in 02:28:07 and Marion Buggins who finished in 02:30:48

Benjamin Goodall of Durham University Tri Club was first out of the water in the sprint distance race and managed to hold on to the lead to finish in a time of 01:10:00.

Oliver Hart came second after crossing the finish line in 01:12:47 and Thomas Greeves secured third place on the final stretch of the run leg in 01:15:05. Alice Sharpe, of Manchester Triathlon Club, defended her title from last year after dominating the women’s field and crossing the finish line in an impressive overall ninth place in 01:17:59.

Runner-up Caroline Austen, of Stockport Tri Club, finished in 01:27:14 and Victoria Elmer came third in a time of 01:29:53.
