Taylor Swift has hit back at an offensive Netflix joke - here’s what she said

Taylor Swift has hit out at Netflix after the streaming platforms’ latest comedy series made remarks about the singer’s relationships - her fans also took to Twitter to defend her.

Swift is currently dating actor Joe Alwyn, who she went public with at last year’s Golden Globes. However, it was not this relationship that writers of ‘Ginny and Georgia’ joked about.

So, what were the jokes about and how has Swift responded? This is what you need to know.

What did Netflix say about Taylor Swift?

Comedy-drama series ‘Ginny and Georgia’ is the latest comedy to debut on Netflix, and is all about a relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter.

In the last episode of the series, the main characters - Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry) and her mother, Georgia (Brianne Howey) are arguing over Ginny’s relationship status when her mother asks her if she has finished with her boyfriend.

Ginny hits back with, "What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift."

The series debuted on 24 February, and has already ranked in second place on Netflix’s most watched charts in its first week.

Has Taylor Swift responded?

The 31-year-old pop and country singer hit back at the series for its ‘lazy horse s***’ attempts at humour.

She took to Twitter on 1 March, posting: “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse s*** as FuNnY.”

Netflix was also the streaming service chosen to debut Swift’s ‘Miss Americana’ documentary in January 2020.

Swift added to her tweet: “Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s History Month I guess”

The documentary shows behind the scenes footage of Swift over years of her singing career, including her relationships, and received a Critics Choice Award in 2020.

Swift has been the focus of huge media attention during her career - having joined Sony Productions aged 14 in 2004 as the record label’s youngest ever signing - and her relationships have made headlines several times.

Fans of Swift, known as ‘Swifties’, responded to the joke with comments of misogyny and disrespect. On 28 February #RespectTaylorSwift began trending on Twitter.

One fan commented: “Taylor was right when she said "There is a different vocabulary for men and. Women in the music industry" Respect Taylor Swift”

Another added: “we are in 2021 and people are still making these disgusting jokes. This is ridiculously misogynistic and disrespectful and the fact that the writers are women is making me SPEECHLESS.”

Who is Taylor Swift dating?

Swift is currently in a relationship with Joe Alwyn, an English actor who was raised in North London.

The 30-year-old has starred in movies such as Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Operation Finale, 2018 Oscar winner The Favourite, and Harriet.

He began dating Swift in 2016, but the couple have kept their relationship out of the public eye, only making their first official appearance together at the 2020 Golden Globes.

Swift has credited Alwyn with supporting her to be more vocal about her beliefs and political views.

In a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair the singer said: “As a country musician, I was always told it’s better to stay out of [politics].

“The Trump presidency forced me to lean in and educate myself. I found myself talking about government and the presidency and policy with my boyfriend, who supported me in speaking out.

“I started talking to my family and friends about politics and learning as much as I could about where I stand. I’m proud to have moved past fear and self-doubt, and to endorse and support leadership that moves us beyond this divisive, heartbreaking moment in time.”

Swift has also dated DJ Calvin Harris, British singer Harry Styles, actor Tom Hiddleston and American musician John Mayer, among others.
