Series four of Our Girl kept viewers hooked during spring of this year. However, the final episode (which aired on 28 April) was Michelle Keegan’s last, as she announced earlier in the year that she would be leaving her role as main protagonist, Georgie Lane.
Although viewers thought another star would be cast as the new lead in the show - like Keegan was when she joined in 2016, taking over from Lacey Turner’s portrayal of Private Molly Dawes - it has recently been announced that Our Girl will not be returning for a fifth series.
‘I just felt like I wanted to explore other opportunities’
The show first began in 2013, launching with a feature length pilot, which was then followed by a five part series in 2014, starring Turner as Molly Dawes. Turner then left the show and was replaced by Keegan, who played the lead character from series two onwards, which aired in 2016.
Speaking earlier this year when the show announced it would be Keegan’s last series of Our Girl, the former Coronation Street star said, “I just felt like I wanted to explore other opportunities. I’ve been doing it for four years now and I absolutely love the show, I really do and I love playing the character. I’m so going to miss it.”
Our Girl creator and writer Tony Grounds explained that it felt like a good time for the show to come to an end, saying, “With the finale of series four showing Georgie ready to move on with her life, it feels like the right time for us to do the same.”
However, Grounds offered a potential spark of hope for fans of the army show adding, “Michelle and I are keen to continue our working relationship and, who knows, maybe we’ll catch up with Georgie in the future. I wanted to say a big thank you to the fans of the show, it’s been a joy to write.”
Piers Wenger, Controller Of BBC Drama, said, “We are very proud of Our Girl and would like to thank Tony Grounds, Michelle Keegan and the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work on the show.”
