Whaley Bridge restaurant honours area's '˜unsung heroes'

A Whaley Bridge restaurant's first anniversary was celebrated in selfless style - by honouring the work of local community champions.

Baileys, which opened just over 12 months ago, used the milestone to invite nominations of people from Whaley Bridge and the wider community who had made a positive difference to individuals and to the community.

Steven Wang, who is a joint owner of the restaurant with Dave Knowles, said: “We were stunned by the number of unsung heroes that were nominated. The nominees included fundraisers, carers, retained firemen, public servants, volunteers and local councillors - people who gave their time to help others voluntarily or to improve the local environment and community.”

The ‘Local Heroes’ included Audrey Bramah (Chinley), Jon Goldfinch (Whaley Bridge and Furness Vale), Julie Kidd (Whaley Bridge), Bill Carr (Whaley Bridge) and Sue Featherstone (Chapel-en-le-Frith) for their tireless work in their communities.

Buxton’s Lia Roos was nominated for her community and charity work, alongside Helen Bostock, from New Mills, who is a volunteer Community First Responder.

Cheree Liggett, from Whaley Bridge, was put forward after raising £4,500 from a charity cycle ride across Cambodia in memory of her sister-in-law.

Tim Hutton, on behalf of Whaley Bridge’s retained firemen, and John Barnes, a stalwart of the Whaley Bridge Rose Queen Festival and carnival for 40 years, rounded off the selected nominees.

All were invited to attend one of two presentation events last month, hosted by Edwina and John Currie-Jones and High Peak Radio’s Paul Jenner, where they received their certificates.
