Whaley Bridge residents urged to stay safe

Whaley Bridge residents are being urged to protect themselves from bag dippers over the festive period.

Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood team are asking residents to be on their guard whilst out shopping and to ensure that their bags and belongings are kept safe from thieves.

PCSO Tracy Jones from the Whaley Bridge Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “The run up to Christmas and New Year is a busy time for most people and security may be put to the back of your mind.

“On a day to day basis I notice people going around the supermarket with their handbags hooked onto their shopping trolleys, which are often left unattended whilst the shopper selects items from the shelves.

“This gives the thief an open opportunity to take your bag, or your purse from inside, and make off.

“I would like to remind people to not leave handbags in, or hooked onto shopping trolleys, and to keep them closed and secure. Where possible, try to keep money, cards and mobile phones on their person and report suspicious activity to police or store security.”
