Whaley Bridge residents take a stand over traffic and parking problems blighting their town

Residents are conducting their own traffic survey in Whaley Bridge.

The week-long traffic study has been organised by Whaley Bridge mum Ruth George, and the findings will be presented at a public meeting at the end of the month.

Twenty volunteers are conducting the survey over a period of 50 hours, to assess exactly when and why problems with traffic are occurring.

Ruth said: “Traffic and parking is the number one problem in Whaley Bridge.

The survey is being conducted over a period of 50 hours.

“The delays on Buxton Road can be for half an hour or more.

“The long queues of traffic blight local businesses and are very stressful for motorists, residents and pedestrians on all the surrounding roads.

“We have even had to call out an air ambulance because a road ambulance could not get through the traffic.

“I am speaking with local organisations about ways that they can assist.

“This is something that affects us all, so I would like to see if we can work together to find some small improvements, that will hopefully add up to make a difference.”

The issue was recently discussed at a meeting of Whaley Bridge Town Council.

Minutes from the meeting state: “High Peak Borough Council is to be contacted to ask what is its plan for lines and enforcement, and what is the long-term strategy for the Tom Brads Croft car park, for example a possible multi-storey car park with funding from SEMMMS mitigation funds.”

The findings of the traffic survey will be presented at a public meeting on Tuesday March 28 at Whaley Bridge Bowling Club from 7.30pm.
